Thank you for choosing JJ Benson Inc. for your custom furniture piece. We are excited to provide you with quality custom furniture. As a valued customer, there are a few items concerning properties of epoxy resin that may affect the appearance of the final product. We would like you to know what these characteristics are to ensure you are fully satisfied with your custom piece:

What is epoxy resin:

Epoxy resin is a two-part plastic-like product that is mixed together and applied in a variety of different methods ranging from pouring in river tables, casting figures and sculptures, being "painted" on to provide a protective coating to a surface, as a "glue" that is very strong and durable. An industry-standard product, epoxy resin has been used in everything from artistic sculptures to hand-turned pens to provide a chemically protective coating on automotive surfaces and can either be colored for artistic purposes or left clear. Below are some common misconceptions and things to be aware of.

Chemical resistance – epoxy resin is known for being resistant to chemicals like gasoline and moisture however it is not rated for prolong exposure which may affect it.

Heat resistance – our resin tables, serving trays, and “stone coat” products are designed to operate under normal environmental conditions while providing excellent resistance to moisture. Please note as epoxy resin is heated it begins to soften so we recommend not placing hot objects like pans directly on top of it without using pot holders and avoid direct exposure to temperatures over 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

Scratches – while we ensure that all of our resin products are fully and properly cured epoxy resin is not known for being exceptionally resistant to abrasion. While resin provides an outstanding bond between two surfaces and moisture protection it can get scratched which is best treated with a buffing compound similar to automotive wax.

Bark retention and object embedding

Due to changes in temperature and humidity, wood will expand and contract over time, therefore we only use woods that are properly seasoned and have reached the appropriate moisture level. We use epoxy resin to glue down the bark, as well as embed objects like river tables, into the live edge slabs.

Color and finishing options

As there are thousands of color and finish options available in resin to include glow-in-dark, pearlescent, metallic, and dozens of other options we are more than willing to discuss finishing options and send pictures as appropriate.

Finishes are susceptible to discoloration due to airborne particles such as cooking, grilling, smoke, fireplaces, candles, grease, etc…Prolonged exposure to natural or artificial light and/or moisture may also cause discoloration; as well as, the age of the wood.
